The Yaesu VR-120D is a compact scanner for listening to AM and FM modes only. It includes the dual-watch function for alternate double listening (not simultaneous), the smart-search option for searching and storing frequencies where activity is detected in the band in use, one-touch-memory (OTM) for a fast recall of 4 favorite stations by pressing a single button. It also has a channel-counter function to measure the frequency of a nearby transmitter operating within a 50 MHz band compared to the one set. 640 memory locations that can be divided into 10 banks. Multiple search options: between band limits, within the memories, with autostoring. Other features: RF attenuator, over the antenna with a flexible stylus there is a ferrite antenna to improve the medium waves reception, to safeguard the batteries can be activated the power-save function, 24 menu items to customize settings.
VR-120D performance and practical notes :
This radio is light and reliable with, more, contained power consumption. Thus meets the requirements of those who seek an essential scanner, convenient to take with you, directed to listen to FM broadcasters and PMR channels. The availability of only a few buttons for managing commands, with menu passages for certain functions, requires a minimum of familiarity with the control logic, after which it proves to be relatively simple even for less experienced users. Peculiar element in this Yaesu is the channel-counter function, it is not a true frequency meter with which to identify where transmits an station to which it is next but offers a utility that if well used makes the listening action as an alternative to the more classic frequency scanning.
The sensitivity is good and roughly constant within the tuning range where the receiver is mainly used between 100~500 MHz. The tuning step at 8.333 KHz is missing, as required by the VHF aeronautical service, although it does not create inconveniences in practice because of the bandwidth in the AM mode which compensates for the modest frequency displacements from the nominal value of the radio channel.
