The Yaesu FT-818 (FT-818ND) continues all the great features of the Yaesu FT-817 with output power increased to 6 Watts and built-in high stability TCXO oscillator besides the 1900 mAh NiMH high capacity battery. This radio is a fully self-contained multi-band transceiver for portable & mobile (car/camping/field) use. Providing coverage of the 1.8 to 28 MHz ham bands, plus the 50 / 144 / 430 bands, the rig includes operation for every modes as well for satellite communications.
YAESU FT-818 Transmit bands and Receiver frequency ranges
The FT-818 is designed for use either from an external power-supply or internal batteries, provides up to 6W of power output (SSB, CW, FM) and selection of four power levels. 6 Watt, 5 Watt, 2.5 Watt, 1 Watt on all bands with 13.8VDC input (AM 2 Watt). When using the battery pack or "AA" alkaline cells, the FT-818ND automatically sets the transmit power level to 2.5 Watt to conserve power, however the power may be switched to 6W or others.
FT-818 compact and light weight :
Measures 5.31" x 1.5" x 6.5" (135 x 38 x 165mm), light weight under 900g, the transceiver is an innovative multi-band, multi-mode portable radio within an ultra compact body. Outdoor portable operation may be enjoyed with the same convenience as a handheld transceiver.
FT-818 two antenna connectors :
This Yaesu transceiver is equipped with 2 antenna connectors, a BNC-type on the front panel and an M-type (SO239) on the rear panel. For portable and field operation the supplied whip antenna may be connected to the front panel connector. The Menu system allows setting which antenna connector will be selected for the operating bands.

YAESU FT-818 optional Collins mechanical filter YF-l22S (2.3 kHz, SSB, left) and YF-l22C/CN (500/300 Hz, CW, right)
Installation of optional filter: remove the FBA-28 battery case or SBR-32MH Ni-MH battery pack from the transceiver. Additionally, disconnect the DC cable from the jack on the rear panel of the transceiver, when operating the FT-818 with a DC power supply. Referring to figure at left, remove the shoulder belt bracket and its 2 screws from both side of the transceiver, then remove the 5 screws affixing the top case of the transceiver, and remove the top case. Note, disconnect the speaker's connector when you remove the top case.
YAESU FT-818, installation and mounting location of optional filter
Refer to figure at right for the mounting locations for the optional filter. Position the filter so that its connectors are aligned with the mounting pins on the board, and push it into place. Replace the internal speaker's plug, then replace the top case, and connect the battery case or Ni—MH battery pack and turn the transceiver on. Now, change the setting of Menu #38 (OP FILTER) to "SSB" if installing the YF-122S device, or "CW" for the YF-122C/CN. Filter installation is now complete.
