HF all-mode transceiver with up to 100 Watts output power and 102 dB dynamic range. Continuous tuning general coverage receiver with a range of 100 kHz to 30 MHz. The IF bandswitch allows you to tailor the receiver bandwidth to the operating conditions. Transmission at a 100% duty cycle is possible for relatively long durations in any mode, including FM and AFSK. Full break-in operation is possible in the CW mode, rapid transmit/receive switching also makes the radio suitable for data communications. The optional built-in automatic antenna tuner (TS-440SAT) will operate from 3.5 to 28 MHz. 100-channel memory stores the frequency, band, and mode. Front panel control of the Tuning dial torque is provided. Ideated in Japan, year of introduction 1985.

TS-440S review
OH5DH | January-26 2024 |
It's always been a great device, it's been working since 1988, but recently there was a problem with the microphone input. The RF unit (X44-1680-00) has a problem. It's difficult to fix, I'll have to take it in for repairs.

My dad have one. He bought it new but ruined it leaving it on for 10 hours at the time, to send certain digital signals in some contests. It created the dot problem and other issues. Many fixes later it works again.
The strong points: great final stage transistor system that lasts nice reception, yes it is not to todays specs but it does a good job oh the delicious design, the analogue meter and the neon display, I love that instead of LCD.
Weaknesses: you already know it creates issues overtime if it has been on for too many time the gue inside some parts gets conductive and will give you headaches. Touchbutton pad wears out after 2 decades.
Give it 7,5/10.
