CCRadio-SW description :

This C.Crane receiver covers the 0.52~30 MHz spectrum using a double frequency conversion configuration with the first up-conversion to minimize the incidence of image frequencies. In general terms, the receiver is suitable both for the home environment, as an FM tuner with excellent sound quality, as well as for the fixed and / or portable listening of AM broadcasters. Separate banks of 10 memories allow you to keep track of the favorite frequencies for each band. For Medium Waves the tuning can be chosen between the 9 or 10 KHz step. For the MW the receiver integrates a ferrite antenna of remarkable efficiency while for the SW and the FM there is a telescopic antenna, two connectors then allow the use of external antennas for the different bands.

Other features: narrow or wide filter selectivity in AM, continuous RF-gain regulation, local or DX sensitivity selection on RF front-end, internal or external antenna switching, high and low audio tone control, clock, alarm, sleep-timer for programmable automatic switch-off, line connections for audio, status indicator for batteries. A double battery compartment allows you to choose the use of batteries (AA) or torch (D), the latter for greater autonomy, while both alkaline and rechargeable types are supported. The charger is integrated into the device and has a detection function that automatically inhibits the cycle when the charge is reached.

The CCRadio-SW is characterized by the availability on a connector, present in the rear panel, of the IF signal related to the AM section between 0.52~30 MHz. This output can be used to connect accessories that make it possible to process and decode emissions in DRM, SSB, etc..

CCRadio-SW performance and practical notes :

The CCRadio SW has been designed to guarantee a high quality, even DX, on Medium Waves without sacrificing sound fidelity in the reproduction of low tones. Thanks to the double ferrite antenna, indicated by the manufacturer as Twin Coil Ferrite, the receiver has an excellent sensitivity in the MW range with a combination of selectivity and sound response significantly better than similar devices in the same price range. The Short Waves between 1.7~30 MHz are well supported by the stylus antenna, which is already suitable for monitoring of weak broadcasting, a connector allows to use an external antenna too. A note on the type of connectors used for the antenna input and the IF output, it is the PAL standard that is substantially foreign in the realizations of other portable radios. In any case, there is no need to face difficulties in the wiring as the package includes two PAL jacks to be used for any need for interfacing the RF signals. To mention the detail of the tuning control knob, this takes advantage of an eyelet resting finger that makes it comfortable to act even for long periods of time.

Positives:

  • The radio has a great warm sound, with its capable 5" speaker, separate bass & treble controls and adequate amplification.
  • The internal twin coil ferrite AM antenna is amazing. You can receive DX AM without an external antenna. AM reception is better than my DSP SDRPlay.
  • Shortwave reception is quite good with the extra long telescoping antenna, good sensitivity, continuous RF Gain, dual band-widths and external antenna connectors. Continuous frequency coverage to 30MHz.
  • The main 2-speed tuning knob feels good.
  • Choice of batteries, C or AA. You can use external power with the supplied wall wart.
  • IF OUT for accessories like a DRM converter.
  • Dual times and dual alarms.
Negatives:
  • This 5 band (AM/FM/SW1/SW2/SW3) radio has only 10 memories per band. You'll find yourself wanting more.
  • There is no keypad for direct entry of frequencies.
  • No BFO, USB, or LSB.
  • Display is OK but not as good as my Tecsun PL-880.

Overall, this a great lunchbox size portable that continues to be a fun, capable radio for AM/FM/SW.
