ATS-909

The Sangean ATS-909 is one of the receivers that has achieved the most diffusion within its category, adopts a rational commands structure and a double conversion system characterized by a good rejection to the image frequencies. The coverage is continuous for long, medium and short waves in AM as well as in SSB (Single Side Band) maintaining a moderate resistance to intermodulations in the entire spectrum. For the FM band the display shows the RDS system informations. 306 memory locations are then available to record favorite stations, even through self-recording following a frequency scan. Each memory can be identified by a label composed of up to 8 characters, in the case of the locations for the SW band the label is to distinguish an entire bank of memories. To note: the receiver was later renewed with ATS-909X / ATS-909X2 models.

ATS-909 performance and practical notes :

For the type of radio, portable with battery power, it is immediately noted in the use a technical care superior to other receivers of the same price range. The dynamic range, or the ability to receive weak signals on frequencies close to strong emissions, is excellent and this aspect combined with good sensitivity below 1710 KHz makes the Sangean ATS909 a good companion for those who seek the DX in far places from urban noise. The RF gain control further maximizes the dynamic in relation to the in-band situation.

Between 1710-29999 KHz the behaviour is appreciated but also a not optimal sensitivity that makes the use of only the telescopic antenna sometimes insufficient. For the listening of the Short Waves the use of an external antenna is to be considered advisable, for this purpose the roller antenna supplied as an in-box accessory already significantly improves the situation.

Remaining as a goal to the DX the ability to choose two values of bandwidth in the intermediate frequency is useful to extract from the interference AM broadcasters, it is then recommended to optimize the audio performance by trying to shift the tuning to ± 1 KHz to better position the window of the filter. The performance of the filter for the SSB is certainly not as required by the most demanding listeners, but overall it is similar if not better than that of other portable receivers, the comparison with higher-end devices instead shows a clear difference.

The tests carried out on the extended FM band deserve a special mention, so not only can the broadcasters operating between 88-108 MHz be tuned in, but also potentially those operating on the equivalent band used in Eastern Europe. The input circuit of the receiver does not adequately attenuate the image frequencies of the conversion stage and therefore the 76-88 MHz spectrum is occupied by translated signals of the commercial FM. Moving to countries that instead see a reduced presence of stations there is the possibility to fully enjoy the wide range of reception.
