R30A description :

The Palstar R30A is a compact receiver, for both fixed and portable installation, with internal battery space, which combines high performance and extremely simple use. The front panel in fact offers only two rotary controls, tuning and volume, as well as five buttons. Operates between 0.1~30 MHz with the peculiarity of not having fixed attenuators inserted in the path of the RF signal for the long and medium wave bands, in contrast to other devices it is therefore suitable for DX on frequencies below 1.6 MHz. The Palstar implements a double conversion configuration with a first IF at 45 MHz, here a filter with a bandwidth of 8 KHz is used which ensures excellent resistance to intermodulation by the following amplification stages. In the second IF two filters are available, one for the AM and one for the SSB / CW, of the known Collins series. These are high quality filters with a noticeable last out-band attenuation, this aspect thanks to a low phase noise PLL synthesizer allows to reach values in the dynamic range on the order of 90 dB for signals spaced over 20 KHz. Sensitivity is placed on appreciable levels in the entire covered spectrum and the front end uses seven preset filters in order not to charge the first mixer with strong out-of-band signals.

Other features: variable steps tuning in relation to the rhythm of the rotation, Up / Down buttons for fast tuning movement, control of the release time of the AGC circuit between slow and fast, mute function to match the R30A to a transceiver, traditional S-meter instrument, 100 memory locations, low and high impedance antenna inputs.

R30A performance and practical notes :

The aspect that more than others in the Palstar R30A stands out at the first glance is the extreme simplicity of its front, a few commands corresponding to the basic functions for an HF device without the presence of controls such as NB, PBT, notch, which are found in other models. Objectively in a complex scenario such as that of shortwave there are times when these last options would be useful but In Palstar this should not be understood as a defect. On the contrary, with its intuitive interface it fully meets the needs of a range of users and enthusiasts who prefer a quality listening but not a technical one. In the ambit of AM broadcasting, in fact, the R30A gives the best of itself, in the short waves certainly but also and above all in the long and medium waves. Listening to stations in SSB is equally effective, thanks above all to the Collins filter used, but only to situations that see the absence of interfering signals within the bandwidth. For the CW the evaluation is more complex, the width of 2.4 KHz is excessive reducing the S/N ratio that can be reached but due to the high slope of the filter such selectivity allows in any way to perform monitoring of weak signals provided that the radio channel is free within +/- 1.5 KHz from the tuned station.
