The ICOM IC-R30 covers a wide frequency range from 0.1 to 3305 MHz, and receives conventional analog signals such as AM, FM, WFM, USB, LSB and CW as well as digital modes including P25 (Phase 1), NXDN, dPMR, D-STAR (Digital Smart Technology for Amateur Radio) and Japanese domestic DCR (Digital Convenience Radio). A ferrite bar antenna for AM broadcasts is built-in, and the earphone cable can be used as an external antenna for FM broadcasts. With dualwatch operation the radio can receive on different bands and different modes: for example, short wave (HF) and local PMR signals (on V/UHF) can be monitored simultaneously. You can scan for other active channels on the B band, while receiving the main signal on the A band. With dual band recording function the audio received while in the dualwatch mode can be individually recorded into a micro-card (microSD / microSDHC) in the WAV format. The recorded audio can be played back on the receiver or a PC. In addition, frequency, mode, S-meter reading, time, current position data and altitude can be saved with received audio. The integrated GPS receiver displays your current position data, course, speed and altitude on the display.
The ICOM ICR30 scans approximately 200 channels per second in the A band, and 150 channels per second in the B band. You can quickly find and lock in to a desired signal. The receiver has variety of scan functions:
- Near station scan
Using GPS location information and the Memory channels, the IC-R30 can display and scan up to 50 stations within 160 km (99.4 ml) from your current location, in proximity order.
- Auto memory write scan
Automatically stores received frequencies, up to 200 CH, during a Programmed scan.
- Priority scan
Checks for signals on a frequency every 5 seconds, while operating on a VFO frequency or scanning.
- Tone scan
Detects a sub-audible tone frequency or the DTCS code in a received signal.
- More scan
Program scan, Memory scan, Memory mode scan, Group scan, Group link scan.
The IC-R30 with tone squelch operation opens only when is received a signal that includes a matching tone. Tone squelch type: CTCSS and DTCS with polarity Normal or Reverse, Digital Code Squelch (CSQL) for D-STAR mode, Network Access Code (NAC) for APCO P25 mode, Group Code (Common ID) for dPMR Tier1, CC code for dPMR Tier2, Radio Access Number (RAN) for NXDN-VN and NXDN-N mode, User Code (UC) for DCR mode.
IC-R30 other features :
Descrambler function for dPMR (Tier2 Mode1/Mode2) communication, by entering the appropriate key. Decryption function for NXDN and DCR communication, by entering the appropriate key. Voice squelch control (VSC) for FM / WFM / AM mode. Auto frequency control (AFC) for FM / WFM mode. CW and CW reverse. Noise blanker and ANL (Auto Noise Limiter). RF gain control and ATT function. 2000 regular memory channels, with 8-character name. Power save function, on 3 steps. Clock. Optional VS-3 Bluetooth headset. The IC-R30 has superior IP57 waterproof protection (1 m depth of water for 30 minutes), it can be used in harsh outdoor environments. The radio also passes MIL-STD-810-G specifications.
IC-R30 priority watch function :
While operating in the VFO mode, or while in the VFO scan, the Priority watch function shortly checks for signals on a selected memory channel every 5 seconds. When the Dualwatch function is ON, you can independently scan on the MAIN band and SUB band. While operating the Priority Watch function, you can change the Operating Band, frequency, receiving mode, and so on. Also you can start or cancel the VFO scan. There are 4 ways to use the Priority Watch function, see below.

IC-R30 band scope function :
The band scope function enables you to visually search a specified frequency range around the received signal and see the relative received signal strength level. You can jump to the desired signal on the band scope to set the radio to that frequency. The Band Scope function has 2 sweep types: Single Sweep, searches the specified frequency range only once - the Single Sweep starts from the lower frequency and the sweep stops after reaching to the upper frequency. Continuous Sweep, repeatedly searches the specified frequency range.
The receiver's sweep bandwidth is i 15 x the tuning step number, centered on the displayed frequency. Example, the displayed frequency is 146.000 MHz and the tuning step is set to 5 kHz. Therefore, the sweep range is between 145.925 MHz (lower edge frequency) and 146.075 MHz (higher edge frequency). For an other example see figure.

In this example a strong signal is received on 146.035 MHz
IC-R30 speech function :
The Speech function reads out the operating frequency and mode when you rotate the dial knob, or press the [SPEECH] button. This function is convenient for making radio adjustments with the Bluetooth headset without having to look at the radio.
IC-R30 recording and playing back :
You can use a microSD card of up to 2 GB, or an microSDHC card of up to 32 GB. You can select to record the received audio from only the Main band or both the Main and sub Bands. As the default setting, the recording is paused while the squelch is closed, and resumes when a signal is received. But you can set to continue recording even while no signal is received.
ICOM IC-R30 playback screen
Note, when the receive mode is D-STAR the received signal's call sign is displayed.
