Grundig G5 / Eton E5 description :

This receiver is sold under two brands, like G5 under the Grundig brand and as E5 with the Eton brand. It is of course the same apparatus in every detail. The G5 / E5 offers continuous coverage in AM and SSB with an double conversion scheme. The tuning can be done with the classic rotary command, by directly entry the frequency on the numeric keypad, or by scanning. 700 memory locations are available to record your favorite stations, there is also the option to self register following a frequency scan, the memory banks - one hundred groups of seven locations each - can then be identified by a distinctive label of 4 characters.

Other features: narrow or wide selectivity, selection of Local or DX sensitivity, clock, quadruple alarm, sleep timer between 1-99 minutes, internal ferrite antenna for LW / MW bands, telescopic antenna for SW / FM, connector for external SW antenna, compatibility with alkaline or NiMH batteries and possibility to recharge the latter directly within the apparatus when it is connected to the main power and by setting the charging period between 1-23 hours depending on the capacity of the cells, status indicator for batteries, audio line-out connection.

Grundig G5 / Eton E5 performance and practical notes :

An interesting feature of the Grundig G5 / Eton E5 is the good ergonomics of use due, in the first place, to the seven dedicated function keys. Being of inexpensive devices is roughly aligned with that of other similar portable radios, different users still report a sensitivity on SW bands markedly above average while in the FM band should be mentioned the discrete selectivity that helps in discriminating stations on nearby channels. On the other hand, the use of the SSB is not exciting because it suffers from a fine tuning command that proves to be impractical.

As a portable RX it has no equals, in terms of sensitivity it is slightly beaten by the Sony ICF2001 which however has the preselector but lacks selectivity. I use it in CW with external preselector and high gain 100Hz audio filter. Very quiet, I modified it for remote ON/OFF, I recommend it to anyone.
PS: Much better than SDR receivers.
