Elad FDM-DUOr is an SDR equipped with direct sampling architecture and the peculiarity of a dual user interface. The receiver has a front panel with the main commands that allow you to set a series of control functions. A good size knob is dedicated to the tuning while two other rotary controls and six buttons allow you to intervene on filters, mode, volume, etc. An LCD display makes the operating conditions readable as well as showing the signal strength with a segmented S-meter. From this point of view, this ELAD adds a new dimension to the SDR of this type, allowing them to be used as stand-alone or autonomously from a computer. The combination with a PC implements the second option available to the user, in this case the FDM-SW1 software expands the processing capacity by increasing both the bandwidth of the sampled radio spectrum and the demodulable modes as well as allowing the spectrum analysis and other ancillary functions.

The heart of the electronics is the 16-bit analog-to-digital converter operating at at 122 Msps, so the whole tuning range is covered without frequency conversion. For the stand-alone operation the high-performance Spartan-6 family FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) based downconverter in conjunction with the STM32F4 processor is responsible for extracting a 192 Ksps channel and demodulating the main modes, ensuring also the selectivity between a predefined filter bank. For the PC side, instead, the USB2.0 connection ensures a wider range of numerical processing thanks to the possibility of dealing with a more consistent flow of data, adequately supported now by an articulated graphic interface rich in settings. Depending on the use, autonomous or combined with a computer, the receiver provides these features:
Stand-alone | |
---|---|
Modes | CW, SSB, AM, FM |
Sample rate | 192 Ksps |
Filters | Predefined band filter, noise blanker |
Adaptive functions | Noise reducer (NR) |
Aux functions | Analog I/Q channel output |
Connected to PC | |
Modes | CW, RTTY, SSB, AM, AM-S, FM, WFM (Stereo and RDS), DRM |
Sample rate | 192 ~ 6144 Ksps |
Filters | Continuous variable band filter, noise blanker, double IF notch filters |
Adaptive functions | Noise reducer (NR), auto notcher |
Aux functions | Spectrum & waterfall, recording and playback of IF and audio data stream |
An interesting utility of the FDM-DUOr is the input for a 10 MHz clock source to synchronize the internal master oscillator, a TCXO stabilized in temperature, making the receiver extremely accurate in determining the frequency tuning to the advantage of effective decoding for the low speed modes used in DX QSO between amateur radio operators. It should be noted that the device is in fact the receiver-only version of the FDM-DUO model, a 5 Watt QRP transceiver. For the receiving part the internal circuit, and therefore some performances that depend on it, is similar to the one implemented in the FDM-S2 from which it stands out, however, for the operating frequency range and the use philosophy.
